What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a specialized form of in vitro fertilization (IVF) that addresses male infertility issues. In ICSI, a single sperm is directly injected into an egg, which can enhance the chances of successful fertilization. This technique is particularly beneficial for couples facing challenges such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or previous fertilization failures.

The ICSI Procedure

The ICSI process involves several key steps:

  1. Ovarian Stimulation: The female partner undergoes hormonal treatment to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
  2. Egg Retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure, usually performed under sedation.
  3. Sperm Collection: A sperm sample is collected from the male partner, which can be obtained through ejaculation or surgical extraction if necessary.
  4. Sperm Preparation: The sperm sample is processed to select the healthiest and most motile sperm for injection.
  5. Injection: A single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg using a fine needle.
  6. Fertilization and Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are monitored for development. Successful embryos are typically cultured for 3 to 5 days.
  7. Embryo Transfer: The best-quality embryos are selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus, where they may implant and develop into a pregnancy.
